Opal Therapeutics, a biotech company enabling acceleration of therapeutic and diagnostic development in women’s gynecological health, announced that it has secured a $1.25 million National Science Foundation (NSF) SBIR Phase II award.
As interest and investment in women’s health therapeutics has rapidly grown in the past few years, the shortage of human-relevant preclinical models has created a critical bottleneck, limiting the ability to evaluate and de-risk promising drug candidates before they enter the clinic. Traditional rodent models fail to replicate human disease biology, creating a severe bottleneck that stalls promising drug candidates from ever reaching clinical trials for gynecological health. This challenge is especially severe for chronic conditions such as endometriosis and uterine fibroids, which affect millions of women worldwide and cause debilitating chronic pelvic pain and infertility.
Opal is directly solving this structural bottleneck with its “uterus in a dish” platform, a patient-derived organoid system that enables scalable drug screening on real human disease tissue in early pre-clinical discovery. By isolating cells from menstrual blood and surgical biopsies, Opal has established a large biobank of organoid and cellular models that capture disease signatures of respective patients. With the NSF funding, Opal will scale its laboratory infrastructure and patient-derived organoid manufacturing to meet growing industry demand. By expanding their imaging and inflammation assays, the company will support larger drug-discovery campaigns with reproducible, human-relevant data. Additionally, Opal will grow its internal datasets to build a predictive “uterine atlas,” pairing patient tissue data with computational analysis for deeper in vitro and in silico insights.
